Iron ore has been range-bound between $90 and $120 per tonne for most of the past year. That stability masks a complex set of forces pulling in opposite directions. Here is a clear read of the market and where the price goes from here.

Where the Price Stands Today

The benchmark price for iron ore is the TSI 62% Fe CFR China index, published by S&P Global Platts and widely referenced in physical contracts and derivatives. In early April 2026, the index sits around $100 to $110 per dry metric tonne, having traded in a band of roughly $90 to $125 over the past twelve months. That range is narrower than the price volatility seen in earlier years, reflecting a market that is better supplied than in the supercycle era but still supported by resilient Chinese demand.

For context: iron ore reached an all-time high above $230 per tonne in May 2021, driven by a post-COVID infrastructure spending surge in China and supply disruptions in Brazil. It fell sharply from those levels as Chinese policy shifted from stimulus to restraint, the property sector began its protracted correction, and supply from Australia and Brazil recovered. The floor of around $80 to $90 per tonne has held through multiple downturns, reflecting the cost support from higher-cost Chinese domestic iron ore production.

The current price represents a reasonable equilibrium given the demand and supply fundamentals. Steel mills in China are running at healthy margins by recent historical standards. Seaborne supply is ample but not flooding the market. Chinese port inventories are within normal seasonal ranges. The market is not distressed in either direction, which explains the relatively narrow trading range.

Derivatives markets offer a window into the price outlook. SGX iron ore futures, the most liquid forward market, show the forward curve roughly flat to slightly backwardated through 2026, suggesting the market does not currently expect a significant sustained move in either direction. Options markets show moderate implied volatility, consistent with a market that is watching Chinese policy developments closely but not pricing in an immediate breakout from the range.

The China Steel Demand Picture

No single variable matters more to the iron ore price than Chinese steel production, which drives roughly 70% of global seaborne iron ore demand. China produces over 1 billion tonnes of crude steel per year, dwarfing every other country. Understanding Chinese steel demand means understanding the two main end-use sectors: construction (accounting for roughly 50 to 55% of Chinese steel consumption) and manufacturing (the remainder, covering machinery, vehicles, appliances and infrastructure).

The construction story is the bearish side of the iron ore narrative. China's property sector has been in a sustained correction since 2021, when Evergrande's debt crisis exposed the overleveraged state of the country's major property developers. New housing starts, property sales and floor space under construction have all declined sharply from peak levels. Construction steel demand from residential real estate has fallen correspondingly. This is not a cyclical trough that will reverse quickly. It is a structural adjustment in an oversupplied property market that takes years to work through.

The manufacturing and infrastructure side of Chinese steel demand is more resilient. China is investing heavily in manufacturing capacity for EVs, renewable energy, electronics and industrial machinery. Infrastructure spending on rail, roads, ports and power grids has accelerated as the government tries to offset property sector weakness with alternative growth drivers. This manufacturing and infrastructure demand is not large enough to fully replace the steel consumed by residential construction at its peak, but it is genuine and growing, providing a floor under steel demand even as the property correction continues.

Chinese steel production policy adds another dimension. The government has periodically attempted to cut steelmaking capacity to reduce pollution and overcapacity. These efforts have had mixed success: while some capacity has been formally retired, new capacity in more efficient electric arc furnaces has partially replaced it, and enforcement of production limits has been inconsistent. In periods when Beijing prioritises economic growth, steel production tends to run above official targets. In periods when environmental policy or carbon reduction goals take priority, production is more constrained. Reading this policy balance is one of the key skills for anyone trading iron ore.

Supply from Australia and Brazil

The iron ore supply side is dominated by four companies across two countries: BHP and Rio Tinto in Australia's Pilbara region, Fortescue Metals in the Pilbara, and Vale in Brazil. These four companies account for roughly 60% of global seaborne iron ore supply. Their production decisions, weather-related disruptions, and logistics infrastructure are closely watched by the market.

Australian Pilbara operations are mature, large-scale, low-cost and highly efficient. BHP's Western Australia Iron Ore system, Rio Tinto's Pilbara system and Fortescue's operations have expanded steadily for two decades, adding port capacity, rail infrastructure and mine pits to deliver consistent volume growth. Supply disruptions from the Pilbara tend to be temporary and weather-related: cyclone season (November to April) periodically causes short-term shipping interruptions that briefly tighten the market.

Brazil's Vale is a more volatile supplier. The January 2019 Brumadinho tailings dam collapse, which killed 270 people, forced Vale to suspend a large number of operations pending safety reviews and dam decommissioning. Brazilian production has taken several years to recover and has not yet returned to pre-2019 levels. Brazil's wet season (October to April) also causes regular logistical disruptions at the port of Tubarao and at inland operations in the Iron Quadrangle. Whenever Brazilian supply disappoints, the market tightens and prices spike. The 2021 price peak was partly driven by Brazilian production disruptions coinciding with strong Chinese demand.

South Africa, India, Ukraine and a handful of smaller producers make up the rest of seaborne supply. India has periodically been a significant swing supplier, depending on domestic export policy and internal demand levels. During periods of Chinese price strength, Indian exports tend to increase. When domestic Indian steel demand is strong, ore stays at home. This swing dynamic adds some additional variability to the supply picture but is not large enough to be a primary price driver.

Grade Premiums and the High-Grade Story

The 62% Fe benchmark price is the market reference, but it is not the price that most producers actually receive. Iron ore trades at premiums or discounts to the 62% Fe benchmark depending on iron content, product form, and the levels of penalty elements including alumina, silica, phosphorus and moisture.

High-grade iron ore, typically defined as 65% Fe or above, has commanded a sustained premium over the benchmark for several years. The premium reflects the operational and environmental advantages of high-grade feed for steel mills. Using high-grade ore improves blast furnace productivity (more iron per unit of ore charged), reduces coke consumption (less fuel needed per tonne of iron produced), and reduces slag volumes (lower gangue content means less material to dispose of). For steel mills operating under pressure to reduce carbon emissions and costs, these advantages translate directly into commercial value.

The most prominent beneficiary of the high-grade premium has been Vale's Carajas system in Brazil, which produces Direct Shipping Ore (DSO) with iron content of 65 to 67% Fe and low impurities. Carajas ore commands one of the highest premiums in the market. Rio Tinto's Pilbara Blend, at 62 to 63% Fe, and BHP's Jimblebar at around 60% Fe sit closer to the benchmark or below it. Fortescue's standard Pilbara Blend Fines (57 to 58% Fe) trades at a discount to the benchmark, although Fortescue has invested heavily in processing upgrades to improve its product mix and reduce the discount.

The grade premium fluctuates with the operating environment at Chinese steel mills. When steel margins are tight and mills need to optimise efficiency, the premium for high-grade ore widens. When steel margins are comfortable and mills are less focused on input cost optimisation, the premium narrows. In 2026, the grade premium for 65% Fe material over the 62% Fe benchmark has been running at approximately $8 to $12 per tonne, which is elevated relative to the long-run average of around $5 to $8 per tonne. This reflects steel mills' ongoing efforts to reduce emissions per tonne of steel produced under Chinese carbon policy pressures.

What to Watch for the Rest of 2026

The iron ore price for the remainder of 2026 will be determined primarily by the interaction of Chinese policy stimulus and the state of the property sector. These two forces are pulling in opposite directions, and the balance between them is genuinely uncertain. Analysts at the major banks have a wide range of price forecasts for end-2026 precisely because the Chinese policy outcome is hard to predict.

The bull case for iron ore rests on Chinese stimulus. Beijing has significant fiscal firepower and a clear desire to stabilise economic growth at or above the government's target of around 5% per year. Infrastructure spending is the most direct lever available: it generates steel demand quickly, creates employment, and is visible. Each major infrastructure investment cycle since 2008 has provided a meaningful boost to iron ore demand. If the government deploys another significant infrastructure package in mid-2026, as some analysts expect, steel demand could surprise to the upside and pull the iron ore price towards $120 to $130 per tonne.

The bear case rests on property sector deterioration. New housing starts in China are at their lowest level in more than a decade. The government's efforts to stabilise property prices and developer finances have produced mixed results. If the property correction deepens further, or if steel mills respond to weak margins by cutting production more aggressively, iron ore demand could weaken and the price could test the $85 to $90 per tonne support level.

The most likely outcome, in most analysts' base case, is continued range-trading around $95 to $110 per tonne. Chinese policymakers are likely to maintain sufficient stimulus to prevent a sharp economic slowdown, which supports steel demand and iron ore prices, while the structural property market correction prevents any return to the euphoric demand levels of 2020 and 2021. For producers, traders and buyers, this means a market that rewards discipline in contract pricing, hedging strategy and cargo timing rather than one where directional bets pay off easily.

Two additional factors are worth monitoring. First, the adoption of electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking in China. EAF production uses scrap steel rather than iron ore as primary input, and its share of Chinese steel output is growing from a very low base. Over time, a shift towards EAF will reduce Chinese iron ore demand per tonne of steel produced. The pace of this shift depends on scrap availability (which is a function of China's existing steel stock reaching end of life) and on carbon pricing policy. It is not a near-term price driver, but it is a structural force that matters for the 2030s. Second, direct reduced iron (DRI) production, which uses natural gas or green hydrogen to reduce iron ore without a blast furnace, is growing globally and particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. DRI favours high-grade ore (67% Fe or above, with low impurities) and is contributing to the sustained grade premium.
